Chinese Culture School-based Learning Activities for 2023-2024

National Costume Clay Painting

Grade: Upper Class


Activity Objectives:

1. Familiarize students with the clothing of the Miao ethnic group.
2. Enable students to design patterns for Miao ethnic clothing.
3. Appreciate traditional Chinese attire.


Activity Description:

The teacher will present a slideshow titled "Ethnic Costumes" for the children to appreciate and learn about Miao ethnic clothing. Following this, the students will use earth-toned oil pastels to draw their own portraits and depict themselves in Miao ethnic attire. They will design patterns and apply colors to their drawings.

Once completed, the students will use clay to create headdresses. After the clay has dried, they will paint them with watercolors and decorate them with various ornaments.

Finally, the students will showcase their artwork and share their creations with others, introducing their pieces and sharing their experiences.

Embarking on the Journey of Brush Calligraphy

Grade: Senior Class

Activity Objectives:

1. Explore the characteristics of the brush

2. Gain a preliminary understanding of traditional Chinese calligraphy

3. Cultivate children's interest and appreciation for traditional Chinese art and culture

Activity Description:

The teacher displays the tools needed for calligraphy writing, such as brushes, ink, and rice paper, and introduces the names and uses of these items to the children one by one.

The teacher demonstrated how to hold a brush, allowing the children to learn the correct way to hold a brush, the steps and points to pay attention to when writing Chinese calligraphy. Then the children were allowed to dip the brush in water and experience the fun of writing with a brush.

Finally, ask the children to write the Chinese New Year greetings with a brush.

Snack Exploration: Making Maltose Sandwich Cookies

Grade: Lower Class

Activity Objectives:

1. Ability to make maltose biscuits by yourself

2. Learn the materials and steps to make maltose cookies

Activity Description:

Show the children maltose biscuits and remind them that maltose biscuits are a traditional snack in Hong Kong. Ask the children to observe and describe the ingredients needed, and then follow the steps to make them.

Cantonese Opera Masks

Grade: Lower Class


Activity Objectives:

1. Use different materials to create Cantonese Opera facial masks.
2. Appreciate the different designs of Cantonese Opera facial masks.


Activity Description:

Start by playing a video clip of Cantonese Opera for the children to enjoy. Guide them to appreciate the designs on the facial masks, including the colors, decorations, and patterns. Then, provide the children with watercolors and let them fill in the colors and create different patterns on the masks.

Once the masks are completed, have the children wear them and take turns playing different roles in a Cantonese Opera scene. Encourage them to appreciate and enjoy the experience of performing Cantonese Opera.

Making a Panda
with Air-Dry Clay

Grade: Nursery Class

Activity Objectives:

1. You can use clay to make panda shapes

2. Appreciate the different forms of pandas

Activity Description:

After the children learned about China's national treasure "Panda" through the theme and related short films, the teacher asked the children to use clay to create extensions. First, let them observe the appearance characteristics of the panda, and then ask them to use rubbing, pressing and other methods to shape pandas in different shapes.

Join us in the Art of Crafting Tangyuan.

Grade: Preschool Class


Activity Objectives:

1. Master the skill of shaping tangyuan.
2. Experience the significance of eating tangyuan.


Activity Description:

The teacher will use a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the ingredients and preparation method of tangyuan to the children. Then, the children will be invited to participate in the activity of shaping the tangyuan.

The teacher will prepare a batch of dough in advance and ask the children to pinch it into small pieces, then shape them into round balls. Finally, during snack time, everyone will have the opportunity to taste the tangyuan and experience the deliciousness together.

Tai Chi

Grade: Preschool Class

Activity Objectives:

1. Learn the basic movements of Chinese Tai Chi.
2. Learn to appreciate Chinese Tai Chi culture.


Activity Description:

The teacher will begin by showing a short video for the children to appreciate Chinese Tai Chi. Then, the teacher will lead the children in learning Tai Chi movements through the video and accompanying music. The children will be encouraged to perform the movements with a combination of gentleness and strength, learning to embody the characteristics of Chinese Tai Chi.
